Even The Sparrows

Even The Sparrows

I was having my morning coffee at my friends house on Saturday. Looking out the window, the birds had caught my eye. Specifically the sparrows.

Now, I’m not much of a bird person, but I did observe. They were a pair, going into and out of the birdhouse. I haven’t the fanciest idea if they had eggs inside or not. However, watching these birds immediately brought to mind this verse in Matthew 10:29-31.

” Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)

This reminds me of God’s love and just how deeply important we are to him. Jesus used an ordinary bird to illustrate this deep truth.  Jesus is telling us that God is aware of everything that happens even to sparrows. Because God places such value on us we don’t need to fear how we are cared for, having our needs met, our messes, personal threats or difficult times. These can’t jostle God’s love nor uproot his Spirit from within us.

” He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. “

Colossians 1:17 (NIV)

God is our sustainer. By HIM everything is held together, protected, and prevented from falling apart and spiraling into chaos. Since Jesus is the sustainer of all life, we are not independent of him. We must trust in him.

  1. Paula, I love the passage about the sparrows (and the lilies of the field, too). Such a blessing to remember that God is our Sustainer. Hugs, friend.

  2. Thank you for this good reminder of just how precious God’s love is. He cares for us even when we don’t deserve it.

  3. Paula I love watching the birds! Sometimes sparrows are despised because they are so common, but I think the fact that God mentions them in Matthew 10 shows how much He values His creation!

  4. Paula, I always begin looking for robins about this time of year. Isn’t it reassuring to know we don’t need to “be somebody” before God will love us? I’m so glad God sees me—and each of His kids. I’m beyond comforted to know He loves me no matter what.

  5. I love watching the birds, especially as they return each spring and make nests. Their sounds always speak to me of their joy and contentment.

  6. I must say this verse you mentioned I always think of when I watch birds here in AZ. It is such a comfort to know our FATHER loves us with an amazing love that is truly immeasurable.
